Each year, thousands of horses from every discipline — racehorses, show horses, working horses, and even beloved companions — end up in kill pens, their fates sealed as they’re shipped out of the U.S. to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.

The Lost Horses Campaign: Protecting All of America’s Equines
Across the nation, thousands of horses — both wild and domestic — are being taken from their homes, separated from their families, and forgotten.
They are America’s Lost Horses.
Filmmaker and advocate Ashley Avis (writer and director of Disney’s Black Beauty) has launched the Lost Horses Campaign, a national effort to give voice to all of America’s equines — from the wild mustangs and burros to our domestic partners.
Through a powerful series of public service announcements (PSAs), the campaign reveals how horses become “lost” in our system — neglected, discarded, or sold into the slaughter pipeline — and calls for federal protection through the SAFE Act (Save America’s Forgotten Equines).

No horse, wild or domestic, should be lost to cruelty, neglect, or silence.
Why This Matters
Every year, tens of thousands of America’s horses — including wild equines — are shipped across our borders for slaughter. Their final moments are not of comfort or care, but of terror, fear, and pain.
These animals deserve dignity and humanity — not death in a foreign slaughterhouse.
The SAFE Act will permanently ban horse slaughter in the United States and STOP THE EXPORT of equines for slaughter abroad. It’s a critical step toward protecting all horses and burros and ending this brutal practice once and for all.
