Ovariectomy Via Colpotomy: Ripping Out Ovaries of Wild Mares

[Warning: Contains Sensitive Material]

Americans love wild horses for their natural, wild behaviors. These amazing animals must survive extreme temperatures and live in rugged terrains. Natural hormone production is known to impact many aspects of mammalian personalities, social behaviors, psychology, physiology and overall welfare.

Sadly, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is pushing to destroy what makes our wild horses “wild” through the gruesome ovariectomy via colpotomy – which is not only barbaric and dangerous, but also stops the natural production of hormones which drive natural behaviors.

In this archaic procedure, a veterinarian forces his arm up through the mare's vulva and rips out her ovaries using a chain at the end of a 1-foot long metal rod — a device that was used back in the 1800's (chain ecraseur). The vet does this “blind,” meaning there is no ultrasound; he is blindly feeling his way around the mare’s delicate internal organs, trying to find the right place.

As you can see from the diagram above, this dangerous surgery involves sticking the metal ecraseur through the vulva, into the vagina. The veterinarian must avoid penetrating the rectum or cutting the Femoral artery. It is noted on record that there is High Risk (some claim only with inexperienced vets) to cause the following:

·      Hemorrhage > bleeding out > death

·      Involving intestines in ecraseur chain

·      Accidental removal of non‐ovarian structures

·      Infection

Below are educational photos of the BLM contractor who “specializes” in ovariectomy via colpotomy. [Warning sensitive material below] This barbaric “blind” procedure must be stopped.  The Cloud Foundation strongly opposes this grotesque and dangerous surgery and supports humane PZP fertility control which preserves natural behaviors and is simply administered via injection.
