For immediate release:
(New York, New York) November 3, 2011 – New York University (NYU) Environmental Law Journal (ELJ), NYU Environmental Studies Program and the NYU-SCPS M.A. Program in Graphic Communications Management and Technology will jointly host MANAGED TO EXTINCTION? - A 40th Anniversary Legal Forum assessing the 1971Wild Free-Roaming Horses & Burros Act (WFRH&BA). Moderated by Dale Jamieson, Professor of Law and Director of the NYU Environmental Studies Program, this panel discussion will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening, November 16th, 2011 at NYU School of Law, Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South.Brian Korpics, Editor-in-Chief, NYU ELJ, states, "We selected a provocative title for this 40th Anniversary Forum to draw attention to the legal issues surrounding this landmark environmental legislation. Our goal is to provide a neutral setting for open discussion and the expression of a wide range of opinions."
Panelists include (in alphabetical order): Deniz Bolbol, Communications Director, American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC); Ginger Kathrens, Volunteer Executive Director, The Cloud Foundation; Dick Loper, Founder, Association of Rangeland Consultants; Ross MacPhee, Curator, Division of Vertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History (AMNH); Katherine Meyer, Partner, Meyer, Glitzenstein & Crystal; Nancy Perry, Sr. VP, ASPCA Government Relations; and Deanne Stillman, author, Mustang, The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West.
According to 40th Anniversary Forum co-chair, Daniel Lutz, Senior Notes Editor, NYU ELJ, "This is landmark legislation. How often do both houses of Congress unanimously pass a bill that keeps rearing its head in controversy, even 40 years after passage? We welcome attendance and participation from the NYU community along with anyone else interested in finding out why this wild horse legislation is caught in the crosshairs of many competing interests." Forum co-chair, Jan Liverance, a student in the NYU-SCPS M.A. Program in Graphic Communications Management and Technology (GCMT), adds, "We reached out to a broad spectrum of constituencies with invitations to participate in this panel discussion, including the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To our knowledge, NYU is the only organization planning an event to highlight the 40th Anniversary and assess this 1971 WFRH&B legislation." Bonnie Blake, GCMT Academic Director, adds, "We are delighted that our students have shared insight and support to the ELJ to strategically build awareness of this 40th Anniversary Forum event through various media channels. "
Forum panelist and writer, Deanne Stillman comments, "With the 40th anniversary of the WFRH&B Act approaching, it's important to recall the words of an unlikely person - Richard Nixon, who signed it, quoting Thoreau." "We need the tonic of wildness," he said, adding that 'wild horses merit protection as a matter of ecological right - as anyone knows who has stood awed at the spirit of a mustang running free.' "
This evening forum is open to the public. Space is limited. Reservations recommended but not required. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. Panelists will be introduced at 6:15 p.m. Audience members are invited to participate in a Q. and A. session at the conclusion of the panel discussion. Reception and NYU bookstore sponsored book-signing to follow. Please visit the website links below for more information including directions to NYU School of Law.
