In an attempt to preserve Cloud’s herd in the Pryor Mountains of Montana, The Cloud Foundation and the Colorado Wild Horse and Burro has filed a Motion to Stay regarding BLM’s Record of Decision to expand fertility control on all Pryor Mustang mares over the age of 11 years of age. Foundation and Coalition Attorney, Valerie Stanley, filed the appeal with the Interior Board of Land Appeals on Saturday, August 28, 2005. “Cloud’s herd is currently below accepted levels to sustain genetic viability and any action by the BLM to further suppress herd growth is viewed as a threat to the future survival of this unique Spanish herd,” stated Ginger Kathrens, Executive Director of the Foundation and Co-Chair of the Coalition. Most responded negatively to the expansion of the infertility drug, yet public input seemed to fall on deaf ears. The Agency has used the experimental infertility drug, PZP, on young Pryor females and then mares over 15 years-of-age beginning in 2001. BLM states ongoing drought as a reason for the action, yet the area is experiencing record moisture and great range conditions.
